2017 Black Hills Air Rally
This was the 9th time we gathered large airplanes in our area for our big event the Black Hills Air Rally.
It is always a lot of work but also a great time. This year was a banner year. We had 50 registered pilots from all over. Randy Hinton and Wayne Bolin, once again reprised their role as being the ones traveling the farthest, but we had a great turnout from Iowa and North Dakota this year. Adding in those from Utah, Nebraska and Wyoming and Colorado brought our total to a very respectable figure.
Some fliers started arriving on Tuesday of Rally Week and by the weekend our parking lot was filled. Friday and Saturday we had food on site with a local taco wagon but most were pretty self contained and found great spots for supper.
During the day, Darryl, Justin and Neal kept the banter and giveaways going on the PA, but on Saturday, Tyler Brown from Lincoln took over and we decided we need him back next year. He added a lot.
Nightime flying was the norm all week. The evenings were always great weather and no wind.
Saturday night Darryl and Ken organized a great supper. Justin’s smoked pulled pork was a real hit. He spent days on it and it showed. No one went away hungry and there were many compliments from our guests.
The raffle plane custom covering by Zac Roller turned out great and the raffle sales were correspondingly high. David Schlindwen from Johnston, IA went away with the prize.
All the work was worth it. Thanks to all who helped, you know who your are. Special thanks to Warren Malone for being the assistant CD. There are hundreds of pictures on our Black Hills Air Rally Facebook page. Thanks to Lori Wiles for all these pictures.
